Dodgers Defined

If you’re just joining the boating community, there is a lot of new vocabulary to hear and learn.  In this article we give a short and sweet explanation of what is meant by the term “Dodger”.

What is a Dodger?

I’ve been a fan of mnemonic devices since my elementary school days and they remain a big part of my learning as an adult.  It is not surprising then, when I first started boating and learning the lingo, I turned to them right away.  For the dodger, I way it helps you “dodge” the elements – namely wind and splash.  It is different from a bimini which is more suited for sun shade and rain protection.

What Types of Dodgers are There?

Hard Dodgers

Hard dodgers are generally framed with lumber and finished with fiberglass.  They include laminated glass windows and they’re bolted on to the boat directly for permanent installation.  They are a very good option for long passages as they offer more comfortable protection during inclement weather, high wind, or rough waves.

Soft Dodgers

Soft Dodgers are framed with strong, but lightweight, aluminum and are made of marine grade canvas and vinyl window materials.  The mounting hardware is permanent, but the dodger itself can be easily raised or removed as weather conditions change.

How Much Do Dodgers Cost?

Hard dodgers can be tricky to determine a price on because most times, you’ll be building and installing it yourself to your specs.  It will depend not only on the size of your boat, but also on any of the “extras” you may want to include in the design.  For a rough estimate, you can expect to spend around $10,000 on average to have good quality for the long term.

Soft dodger pricing will vary depending on whether or not you’re replacing an existing dodger (and have a frame and mounting that you can reuse) or if you need everything installed as new.  On average, $500.00 will cover a two-bow dodger frame and mounting, and the custom-fit canvas will range between $2,000 and $5,000 depending on the boat size and number / shape of windows you want to incorporate into the design.

Should I Get a Dodger?

Dodgers aren’t a requirement to have fun day on the water; however, a well-designed dodger can add a lot of comfort for you and your guests while sailing or cruising.  They can also improve onboard safety.  In times of inclement weather, the protection dodgers provide from splash and wind will help to keep everyone dry and warm as well as provide clear sight lines for steering and looking out.
